SEO Manager interview loops
How to interview an SEO manager who owns search and AI answers: what employers hire on, and a loop from a live answer engine to a budget cut.
An SEO manager owns how a company is found when someone searches for what it sells: in Google's results, in the AI Overviews above them, and in the answers ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Claude give when asked for a recommendation. The job covers what the site serves to crawlers, what gets published and in what shape, where the company is mentioned on pages it does not own, and the measurement that says whether any of it worked. Postings now name the answer engines alongside Google, as AEO (answer engine optimization) or GEO (generative engine optimization), two names for the same work, and the title nearly always keeps "SEO" in it.
As of October 2026 four kinds of employer hire for it. Software companies hire in-house to run a channel that is already one of their largest: Stripe's head of AEO and SEO owns organic growth across search, general-purpose assistants and coding assistants (Stripe), and Airbnb's senior growth marketing lead for SEO, AEO and GEO does the same for travel (Airbnb). Smaller AI and software companies hire one person to set the strategy and ship it: Reducto's SEO/GEO manager works in the marketing site's codebase (Reducto), and Juniper Square's SEO and AEO manager runs the agencies and vendors as well as the technical program (Juniper Square). Large enterprises split the work: Palo Alto Networks hires a GEO manager under a director of search and GEO to own technical SEO and AI crawler access (Palo Alto Networks), and Intel a discoverability lead who turns AI-visibility tracking into weekly briefs for its content, PR, web and business-unit teams (Intel). And vendors of AI-visibility tools hire the same skills to advise their clients, as Evertune does (Evertune). Stripe, Airbnb and Juniper Square hire remotely across the US; Reducto and Academia.edu want people in their San Francisco offices (Academia.edu), Evertune in New York three days a week, and Intel and Palo Alto Networks on site at their campuses.
The duties are much the same across those postings. The manager keeps the site crawlable and indexable, from rendering and redirects to structured data, internal links and site speed, mostly by writing requirements for web engineers, though Reducto and Decagon expect them to ship changes in the code or the CMS themselves (Decagon). They decide what content gets made and in what shape, more and more of it as pages generated from templates. They track how the company appears in AI answers, counted as citations and share of voice rather than rank, and build its presence on the pages those answers cite: review sites, Reddit threads, YouTube and the press. Two newer duties show up in some of them. One is making documentation readable by coding assistants, so that a developer's assistant integrates the product correctly, which Stripe and Reducto both ask for. The other is checking what AI tools recommend before it reaches anyone: Motive wants audits drafted by AI with "human judgment applied before anything ships" (Motive), and Intel's discoverability lead reviews agent-written recommendations for invented claims. All of them report the channel to executives, including the value of work that is hard to attribute, such as preventive technical fixes, which Airbnb asks for by name.
What employers screen for starts with years: five or more for a hands-on manager at Reducto and Juniper Square and for Stripe's AEO and GEO marketing manager, eight to ten at Palo Alto Networks, and ten or more with team leadership for Stripe's head of the function and Airbnb's lead. Then depth in technical SEO and in content strategy together, rather than one of them. Then a working account of how answer engines retrieve and cite pages, and a point of view on what to do about it. Airbnb wants candidates who write their own SQL against crawl, log, Search Console and conversion data. Juniper Square asks for the most concrete evidence: a specific citation the candidate earned in an AI answer engine, and exactly how they earned it. Several postings also name an AI-visibility tool such as Profound beside Search Console, Ahrefs or Semrush, and a crawler.
Pay, as posted in October 2026, is base salary in the US, and most ranges move with location. Technical SEO specialists and analysts are posted at $84,000 to $123,000 (1Password, Motive). Managers sit mostly between about $115,000 and $205,000: SurveyMonkey $114,750 to $135,000 (SurveyMonkey), Juniper Square $116,000 to $160,000, Coursera $129,200 to $187,000 outside the Bay Area (Coursera), Reducto $150,000 to $180,000 plus equity, Intel $121,130 to $205,910 and Palo Alto Networks $125,800 to $203,500. Airbnb posts $196,000 to $245,000 for a lead with ten years or more.
Two things make the role hard to interview for. The vocabulary arrived before the practice: any candidate can talk about entities, llms.txt and share of voice, and far fewer have run a measurement that held up when an answer engine gave three different answers to the same question. And the results of the work arrive months later, in a number several other things also moved, so a candidate's past wins are hard to check. The loop below hands the candidate live answers, a predecessor's dashboard, a page's raw HTML and an executive who has already decided, and reads what they do with each.
A loop is a set of round plans in order. Each round scores one to three competencies, every must-have is scored in at least two rounds, and the debrief is held competency by competency rather than round by round, so no single interview decides the hire. How these plans work covers the rest of the method.
Interview loops
| Interview loop | Rounds | Time | Must-haves |
|---|---|---|---|
| SEO Manager, search and AI answers | 4 | 4 h | Measurement, Crawling and retrieval, Prioritization, Executive communication, Cross-functional delivery |
What each loop scores
How many rounds of each loop score a competency, and whether the loop treats it as a must-have or a nice-to-have.

| Crawling and retrieval | Must-have · 2 rounds |
| Prioritization | Must-have · 3 rounds |
